From 21 March 2012, James Steventon will take part in Altered States: a three day immersive workshop with British Performance Artist Martin O’Brien, allowing artists working with endurance based practices to exist in extremis.
This will consist of a disciplined structure of physically demanding tasks and the development of performance work. The workshop will focus on physical endurance by pushing participants to explore the possibility of creating work at the limits of human corporeality in an altered state of consciousness. This will be achieved through a series of exercises that work with the following techniques in relation to the artist’s body:
• Physical labour
• Intense physical activity
• Use of speed/exploitation of time
• Physical difficulty/ordeal
• Periods of fasting
• Periods of sleep deprivation
On the final day:
Kai-Oi Jay Yung
will present durational performance work over the course of 24 hours, open to the public (6pm Friday 23 March – 6pm Saturday 24 March).
